South Goa Beaches

Those in dire need of a break from work, city life and stress will find the beaches of south Goa extremely relaxing. The beaches here are quieter and more serene undisturbed by the wild parties and hangouts unlike the ones in the north. Stretching 20 kms long, the silvery beaches in South Goa begins from the Majorda Beach till the coast of Cabo de Rama with Bogmalo, Velsao, Majorda, Colva, Benaulim, Betul, Canaguinim, Agonda and Palolem in between.

Colva is the most popular beach in the south. With the regular inflow of visitors, the area surrounding the Beach has developed into a bustling market replete with restaurants, stalls and shacks. In October, a large group of pilgrims come to visit the Colva Church to see the miracle statue of Menino Jesus. North of Colva stretches the Majorda for about 5 kms. Majordans, the people of Majorda are the best bakers in Goa as they are the first to learn the art of baking European breads.

Bogmalo is equally famous for the huge 5-star Oberoi Hotel that stands right at the edge of the Beach. Due to the hotel, the beach has an air of exclusivity. Water sports like windsurfing and water skiing are available at Bogmalo.

At Velsao unwind in the lap of nature by walking in the soft beaches and warm waters with the gentle wind blowing softly on your face. This 20 kms long beach is also considered quite safe for swimming.

Head to Benaulim Beach and trace the earliest history of Goa. According to legend, Parashuram's arrow landed at Benaulim that led to the creation of the state. Famous for fishing, the beach is still not discovered by local tourists. It is also one of the few places where one can find traditional handicrafts. The Church of St John the Baptist perched on top of a hill nearby is worth a visit.

Betul is not the place for unwinding but the hordes of fishermen and their catches still makes the beach an interesting visit. Otherwise, enjoy a view of the setting sun from the Portuguese fort towering on the nearby hill of Cabo De Rama.

The lack of bus service to Agonda is a blessing in disguise as it helps the beach remain unspoilt. The arc-shaped Palolem beach is picture perfect with white soft sand and swaying palm trees. Rent one of those temporary coconut huts erected at the beaches and enjoy the simplicity of the life there.
