If you are thoroughly tired of the wild merry-making found in most of Goa's beaches then come to Patnem Colomb. The beach is much smaller than the adjoining crowded Palolem but it is indeed a beauty to behold curving like a horseshoe with towering green palms blending beautifully with the clear emerald waters. Here you will have plenty of space to relax, rejuvenate, ponder or philosophize.
The beach is a blend of two tiny beaches, Patnem, which is just 1 km long, and the Colomb beach, which do not even measure a km. It is 72 kms from Panaji and about 40 kms from Margao, the commercial hub of Goa. Devoid of carnival atmosphere and adventure sports, it is the best place for that much-needed peace, privacy and personal space. It is also popular for swimming and surfing. The best time to visit is between November and February.
Getting There: To get to Patnem Colomb, you will have to make a stop at Palolem first.
Getting to Palolem is easy as there are direct buses from Margao daily. The best option however, is to take a bike as this will also provide easy access locally.
Where To Stay: There are plenty of accommodations at Patnem Beach but most tourists prefer to stay at Palolem. However, do not follow this trend because staying in Patnem has two advantages, the accommodations here are cheaper and the scenery at Patnem beats that of Palolem. If you are on a long vacation, you will save more by renting a house or a room (attached with bathroom and kitchen). The guesthouses are also reportedly quite economical. But the best bet would be the beach houses with the Mountain Palms, Parvai Huts and Home being the most popular.
What To Do: Begin your day by taking a short stroll at the beach. After that, laze under the swaying palms and read a book or just sleep and sleep. Continue with a short swim and if you are into surfing, you can have a great time here. The surfing equipment are available on rent from the shacks but it is better to bring your own because they are not of good quality. If your stomach starts growling, then there are few shacks and restaurants dotting the shoreline where you can fill yourself while enjoying the view of the ocean. The Green Garden restaurant is a popular eating joint here. Ayurvedic massage and yoga classes, boat rides are also available.
