Indian history as old as the history of human settlement, as old as the history of geography where the remoulding of the surface of the earth, into the pattern now familiar to us as seven continents of the world, comes about between 200 and 20 million years ago. The remains of Homo erectus which was found in Hathnora in the region of Narmada Valley in located in the Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh, Central India show that India might have been dwelt since at least the Middle Pleistocene era, somewhere between 200,000 to 500,000 years ago. Broadly speaking, so far as record of the evolution of the history of India is concerned it can be roughly classified into the seven periods under the following headings:
1) Ancient India
2) Medieval India
3) The Years of Coming of Europeans
4) Colonial Era of British Raj
5) Modern India
6) The Struggle for Independence
7) Post-Independence India
