Chandaka Elephant national park is situated out skirts of Bhubneshwar, the capital of Orissa, covers an area of 193 sq km. It is a unique park of its kind located around ever green forest of Khurda Uplands. The park is established in 1982, and a centre of attractions
The fauna of the park include from semi evergreen, to the moist kangada forests, coastal sal forest, thorny bamboo brakes, planted teak and eupatorium scrub. The park falls in sub tropical regions, thus, a home to the many other plants such as medicinal herbs, bamboos, with a few orchids which provide shade and food for the elephant.
The dense, mangrove and thickly evergreen vegetation provide shelter to 30 species of mammals, 27 species of reptiles and 120 species of birds. The park gives an ideal destination to the elephant and watching them in their natural habitat sleeping in shade or plying with water in the lake is really an amazing feeling. Apart from the elephant, you can explore leopard, chital, barking deer, mouse deer, langur, rhesus monkey, mongoose, sloth bear, wolf and hyena. There are many other reptiles found in the park such as snakes, python, monitor lizard and crocodiles. If you are fond of bird, you should visit the park in January and February, it is the perfect time to explore the beauty of many endangered species of birds for instance storks, heron, egrets and cormorants, Garganey and common teal, pin tail, white eyed Pochard and spot billed Duck.
The Chandaka national park has more than three watch towers from where one can enjoy and explore the virgin flora and fauna of the wildlife sanctuary.
