Mangalavanam Bird sanctuary is one of the most admired bird sanctuaries in India. Situated behind the High Court of India at Kochi, in god's own country, Kerala, it s a paradise for bird watching and supports many varieties of dense forest. The sanctuary is considered to be lung of Kochi, located along with panoramic view of Arabian Sea and Kerlian back waters.
The vegetation of the park includes dense, mangrove and ever green forest area cover such as
Avicennia officinalis , Rhizophora mucronata, Acanthus ilicifolius and Acrostichum aureum
According to the recent study, the sanctuary also boasts off six species of mammals such as
Indian Flying-fox,painted bat, three striped palm squirrel – Dusky Palm Squirrel, house rat- Black Rat, andicota, and Eurasian otter.Seven species of fishes are also found Anabas testudineus,Striped panchax, Orange chromide, Etroplus suratensis, Malabar swamp eel, Blackline rasbora and Sarotherodon mossambica.
Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary is paradise for bird watching which includes 72 species of resident and migratory birds such as Pheasant-tailed Jacanas, Chipmunks, Doves, Babblers, Quails, Partridges, Kingfishers, Flycatchers, Minivets, Herons, Egrets, White Ibis, Spot-bill Ducks, Cormorants, Pelicans, and Painted Storks so on.
Apart from the birds, the sanctuary emerges as a picnic spot for domestic as well as foreign tourists as it covers many dense and evergreen trees for instance eucalyptus, teak, timber etc.
The best time to visit the heaven for birds is from October to April.
