Satkosia Basipalli Sanctuary

Satkosia Basipalli Sanctuary was a relatively less known Sanctuary in Orissa till it gained popularity in recent years for its Gharial Breeding Project. This huge sanctuary covers an area of 1330 sq km including a majestic 22 kilometre long gorge formed by the Mahandi River cutting through the Eastern Ghats. It was founded in the year 1976 spanning across the districts of Cuttack, Nayagarh, Angul and Budh. The Angul section is the most appealing with relatively hilly area covered by moist and dry deciduous forests and dense groves as well as moist peninsular sal forests made more charming by the vibrant red hues of the Genwa and the Khalsi flowers. Visitors are always enchanted by the colourful myriad of flowers here.

Tigers, elephants, leopards, red panda, sloth bear, gaur, sambar, nilgai, spotted deer, mouse deer, four horned antelope and wild goat seek refuge in Satkosia. Also, fresh water turtle, gharial, mugger crocodile as well as several varieties of snakes live in the dense forest.
