Satkosia Basipalli Sanctuary was a relatively less known Sanctuary in Orissa till it gained popularity in recent years for its Gharial Breeding Project. This huge sanctuary covers an area of 1330 sq km including a majestic 22 kilometre long gorge formed by the Mahandi River cutting through the Eastern Ghats. It was founded in the year 1976 spanning across the districts of Cuttack, Nayagarh, Angul and Budh. The Angul section is the most appealing with relatively hilly area covered by moist and dry deciduous forests and dense groves as well as moist peninsular sal forests made more charming by the vibrant red hues of the Genwa and the Khalsi flowers. Visitors are always enchanted by the colourful myriad of flowers here.
Satkosia Basipalli Sanctuary is gifted in abundance in both flora and fauna, and millions of micro organisms are found on the fringes of the islands. The sanctuary is every wildlife lover's dream where one can explore the vast species of fauna sheltered in the sanctuary's premises either on a boat or jeep. Tigers, elephants, leopards, red panda, sloth bear, gaur, sambar, nilgai, spotted deer, mouse deer, four horned antelope and wild goat seek refuge in Satkosia. Also, fresh water turtle, gharial, mugger crocodile as well as several varieties of snakes live in the dense forest.
Satkosia Basipalli Sanctuary is also a popular place for trekking. The hilly picturesque and undulating topography come as a challenge to adventure loving trekkers. The Tikarapada area which is located right in the middle of the gorge should not be missed even just for the sheer experience of taking in the views of the surrounding landscape.
Best Time To Visit: Satkosia Basipalli Sanctuary can be visited the year round but the months from October to early June is the best time.

By Air: The nearest airport is at Bhubaneshwar which is 210 kms away while Kolkata at a distance of 240 kms is another close airport.
By Rail: The nearest railway station is at Angul at a distance of about 60 kms. Other major railheads are at Jamshedpur (140 km), Bhubaneswar (350 km), Kolkata (240 km).
By Road: The sanctuary is well connected by road from Angul where there are taxi on hire and local buses to catch.
Accommodation: There are plenty of hotels for accommodation at Angul which is at a distance of 60 kms.
