Singba Rhododendron Sanctuary

Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary is perhaps the most beautiful sanctuary in Sikkim noted globally for its abundant growth of rhododendrons. Within this 43 sq. km enclosure of the park, around 20 different species of rhododendrons can be found. Singba is located in the sublime Yumthang Valley famous for its alpine meadows and hot springs with elevations ranging from 3048 to 4575 meters. The eastern part of the sanctuary is surrounded by the Chuba-Sagochen mountain ranges and on the west by Chomzomei Tso that extends till the Lava Pass while the Yumthang Chhu River runs through the sanctuary adding to the beauty of the park.

The entire valley on which the Sanctuary stands is criss-crossed with several small glacial streams. Singba is a park of extreme beauty comprising several hot springs, alpine meadows, lush green forested hills with flowering bushes and high snow peaks.

Apart from the state tree, Rhododendron nevium, which are found in abundance throughout the park other flowering plants such as primulas, potentillas, gentians, larch, juniper, maple with trailing lichens also thrive here. Singba also abounds in silver fir and spruce.

Flora: Singba Rhododendron Sanctuary is endowed with rich natural vegetative cover of various species of plants and trees. However, it is noted most for its abundant growth of rhododendron shrubs and trees that lends a colourful look to the park during the spring. Other trees found are potentillas, saxifrages, primulas, aconites, poppies, gentians, etc.

Fauna: Numerous animals like tigers, goral, common hill partridge, serow, spotted linsang, blood pheasant etc find shelter at the park.

Other Attractions: There are facilities for angling in Phuniya Chhu and Yumthang Chhu from April to September. The hot spring at Yumthang is also a must visit as well as the waterfall at Phuniya.

When To Visit: The best time to visit Singba Rhododendron Sanctuary is during the spring season especially during April and May when the entire valley flourishes with a riot of colours.
