South India Wildlife Sanctuaries

India is bestowed with rich flora and fauna and also known for its diverse topography. At the one hand, north India wild life sanctuaries is located around the great Himalayan ranges and gangetic planes where as south India wildlife sanctuaries is situated around Deccan Plateau and western and eastern ghats. South India is not only famous for the back waters and temples but also for its enchanting flora and fauna. It is the home for semi ever green forests and natural vegetation that boats off more than 500 species of mammals, 1225 varieties of birds, 1600 types of reptiles and amphibians and about 57,000 species of insects. That is why Indian government has established several wildlife sanctuaries to preserve the jewel of the jungle. Some of them are described below-

Periyar National Park-.

Mudumalai wildlife sanctuary- one of the most sought wildlife destination in south India, it is located at an elevation of about 1,000 meters at the tri-junction of the three southern states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. Situated around enchanting western hilly ghats, the park is expanded up to 321 sq. km. The Mysore-Ooty national highway is passes through the park and a part of known Nilgiri bio-sphere Reserve of India. It is an ideal home to many migratory birds such as rested Hawk Eagles, Crested Serpent Eagle, Malabar Trogon, Malabar Whistling Thrush, Large Racket-Tailed Drongos, Spotted Babbler, Green Pigeons, Brown Dove, Malabar Grey Hornbill, Parakeets, Bulbuls, Cuckoos, Hornbills, Scops Owl, Tiny-eared Owl, Black Woodpecker, Mynas, Barbets, Buzzards, Harriers, Falcons and the King Vulture.

Apart from birds, the park boasts off other mammals for example elephant, Tiger, Leopard, Gaur, Hyena, Jackal, Sloth Bear, Sambar, Chital, Muntjac, Mouse Deer, Wild Boar, Mongoose, Porcupine, Giant Flying Squirrel, Bonnet Macaque, Barking Deer, Four Horned Antelope, Otter and Langurs.

Besides these parks there are other wildlife sanctuaries established in south India such as:
Bandipur wildlife sanctuary, Karnataka
Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, Tamilnadu.
Nagarjuna ( Srisailam) Sanctuary, Kerala.
Annamalai Sanctuary.
Bhadra wildlife Sanctuary
Alisagar Deer Park
Calimere wildlife Sanctuary etc are important one.
